Bryson DeChambeau penalized two strokes after rules inquiry at Open Championship

Résumé

Bryson DeChambeau was assessed a two-stroke penalty for a possible rules breach, dropping him from second place to a tie for fifth, while Lucas Herbert and Sam Burns each posted 62s in the second round of the Open.

Bryson DeChambeau finished the second round of the Open Championship at Royal Birkdale with a birdie on the 18th hole, moving to 7-under for the tournament. Before signing his scorecard, officials informed him of a potential rules violation that occurred earlier on the fifth hole, where he was alleged to have improved his lie after his ball entered tall grass. After a ten-minute review, officials ruled a penalty was warranted, docking DeChambeau two strokes and dropping him to a tie for fifth at 5-under.

Australian Lucas Herbert recorded a six-under 28 on the front nine, tying the lowest nine-hole score in Open history, and finished with a 62, giving him an 8-under total and the 36-hole lead. Fellow competitor Sam Burns also posted a 62, finishing three strokes behind the leader.

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler posted a 68 in the round, moving to 4-under. The final pairing for Saturday will feature Herbert and Jackson Suber after DeChambeau's penalty altered the leaderboard.
