Lucas Herbert ties Open record with nine-hole 28 as Jackson Suber leads after first round
Australian Lucas Herbert posted a nine-hole 28, matching the lowest score in Open Championship history, while American Jackson Suber held a one-stroke lead after round one at Royal Birkdale.
Australian Lucas Herbert recorded a six-under 28 on the front nine, tying the Open Championship’s record for the lowest nine-hole score. The 30-year-old’s performance came as American Jackson Suber, who shot a 5-under 65 on Thursday, maintained a one-stroke lead after a 1-under 69 in the second round at Royal Birkdale.
Herbert’s nine-hole total placed him among the tournament’s best scores, while Suber, a first-time European competitor, remained near the top of the leaderboard.
The day’s tee times featured several leading players, including Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler and Jon Rahm, with coverage available on Peacock and USA Network.
"Herbert’s 28 ties the lowest nine-hole score in Open history," tournament officials noted.
"Suber’s opening round of 65 gave him a one-stroke advantage heading into the second round," said a spokesperson for the event.
