NBC anchor Craig Melvin confronts intruder at 30 Rockefeller Plaza during live broadcast
A man who entered NBC’s headquarters during the “Today” show was detained after anchor Craig Melvin intervened; the suspect was later charged with multiple hate-crime offenses.
During the morning edition of the “Today” show, a man entered the lobby of NBC’s headquarters at 30 Rockefeller Plaza and proceeded toward Studio 1A. Anchor Craig Melvin noticed the individual, alerted security and pursued him back through the lobby. The encounter lasted about eight to ten seconds, after which Rockefeller Center security detained the man and police arrested him without incident.
Police identified the suspect as 41-year-old Andrew Truelove and charged him with burglary, menacing, criminal trespass, harassment and related hate-crime counts. No injuries were reported.
NBC issued a statement saying there was no altercation and that the network is reviewing its security procedures. Melvin posted on Instagram that he was “doing just fine” and thanked viewers for their support, indicating he would return to the show the following morning.
