New York City police detained a man on Thursday after he entered a restricted vestibule near the TODAY show’s Studio 1A at Rockefeller Plaza and shouted a racial slur at co-anchor Craig Melvin. The anchor alerted security, and officers took the individual into custody without further incident or injury.
"The individual was detained and taken into custody by law enforcement without further incident. There was no altercation, and no one was injured," the TODAY statement said.
The program described the episode as a "security incident" and said NBC and TODAY are reviewing security protocols and cooperating fully with the investigation. The suspect was identified as 37-year-old Andrew Truelove, who has a criminal record and pending cases in New York courts. A preliminary search found no weapons on his person.
Craig Melvin, who joined TODAY in 2018 and became co-anchor in 2023, was not harmed in the incident.
