Toronto police investigate shooting at Latin culture festival that left two dead and four injured
A gunfight at the Salsa on St. Clair festival in Toronto resulted in two fatalities and at least four injuries, prompting a police investigation and the cancellation of the event's second day.
Police said a shooting at the Salsa on St. Clair festival in Toronto on Saturday night left at least two people dead and four injured. Deputy Chief Frank Barredo told reporters that gunfire was exchanged between two individuals, and that two firearms were recovered at the scene. The investigation is covering at least three crime scenes, and no arrests have been made.
The festival, which draws roughly 13,000 attendees, was suspended for Sunday, July 12, while police continue their inquiry.
"This seemed to be an exchange of gunfire between individuals targeting each other – obviously, indiscriminately putting vast numbers of people in great danger," Barredo said at a press conference.
Festival organizers expressed sorrow over the incident and said they would not resume the event pending the police investigation. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he was horrified by the shooting and offered support to law-enforcement efforts.
Toronto, which has strict gun regulations, has seen a rise in gun-related incidents in recent years, with police reporting 33 shootings in the city so far this year.
