Utah judge holds preliminary hearing in Charlie Kirk murder case
A Utah judge conducted a week-long probable-cause hearing to decide whether prosecutors possessed sufficient evidence to move forward with a trial against Tyler Robinson for the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University. The hearing, first announced by Fox News as a week-long preliminary proceeding, began with prosecutors showing new security-camera footage of the rooftop where the shooting occurred, as reported by Fox News and the BBC. Prosecutors also presented surveillance video of Robinson purchasing a Chick-fil A meal before the attack, forensic DNA analysis linking his genetic material to the rifle, and text messages in which Robinson appeared to confess, according to CBS News and the BBC.
Robinson’s defense team questioned the reliability of the FBI DNA testing and sought to exclude portions of the evidence, a challenge noted by AP News. The judge allowed portions of a pre-recorded interview with Robinson’s former roommate and selected text messages to be admitted while ordering other parts redacted, as the BBC reported. After hearing the evidence, the judge was set to determine whether the case met the threshold for trial, a decision noted in the final reports from the BBC and AP News.
