Kentucky Governor Requests Health Update from Senator Mitch McConnell
Governor Andy Beshear sent a letter to Senator Mitch McConnell asking for a public update on the senator's health and ability to continue serving, after weeks of speculation following his hospitalization.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear wrote to the office of senior U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell, urging the Republican lawmaker to provide a public update on his health and capacity to fulfill Senate duties. Beshear said Kentuckians have become increasingly concerned about the senator’s condition and that transparency would help curb ongoing speculation.
The request follows McConnell’s hospitalization 24 days ago after a medical emergency that his office has not detailed. Reports indicated paramedics performed CPR during a cardiac arrest on June 14, but no further information has been released about his current status or expected return.
"Over the last several weeks, Kentuckians have grown increasingly concerned about the health and well-being of Sen. McConnell. As Governor — and a fellow public official who understands the commitment we’ve made to the people we serve — I am requesting the Senator provide an update on his current health status," Beshear said in a statement.
"Allowing speculation to continue in the media is not fair to the Senator or to Kentuckians, and my hope is that this provides him the opportunity to share the information in a transparent manner, direct from the source," he added.
McConnell’s office declined to comment on the governor’s letter. A spokesperson previously referred reporters to allies who said they had recent phone conversations with the senator on various policy matters. An earlier statement from the senator’s office said he was improving and working with staff while the Senate was out of session, but no timeline for his return was given as the chamber prepares to reconvene next week.
