Summary

Democratic Governor Andy Beshear asked Senator Mitch McConnell to confirm his condition publicly, citing recent photos as insufficient to end speculation.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said the latest hospital photo of Senator Mitch McConnell does not answer questions about the lawmaker’s health and urged him to appear on television or provide a video confirming he is well. Beshear noted that a recent conversation between McConnell and CNN contributor Scott Jennings, who described the call as lasting 17 minutes, could be replaced by a brief three-minute interview with the governor or a simple on-camera statement.

"To be fair, Scott Jennings works for CNN. He can go on air, dial him up, put him on speakerphone, and we can put all the speculation to rest," Beshear said, adding that Jennings had not offered such a live interview.

In a letter addressed to McConnell and his staff, Beshear demanded more detailed information about the senator’s condition or his resignation, stating the physician’s statement released earlier did not clarify McConnell’s ability to speak, reason, or perform Senate duties. The letter began, "I am addressing this letter to Senator McConnell under the assumption that he is capable of reading and responding verbally, and not incapacitated by means of consciousness or cognition."

McConnell was found unconscious on June 14 and hospitalized after a fall that he attributed to long-standing mobility challenges. He later released statements indicating he suffered a brief loss of consciousness, mild pneumonia, and was not yet cleared to leave the rehabilitation facility. The governor’s request comes amid ongoing public speculation about the senator’s health.
