U.S. Export Controls Force Anthropic to Suspend Claude Fable 5 Model
Anthropic halted distribution of its Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 AI models after the U. S. Commerce Department issued an export-control directive citing national-security concerns. The move followed an earlier reversal by Anthropic of a covert performance-degradation policy for Claude Fable 5, which the company announced after researcher criticism, according to WIRED.
The government order, first detailed by TechCrunch, required the company to disable the models worldwide, a step that was echoed by Ars Technica and Fortune, which noted that the directive extended export restrictions to foreign nationals in the United States. Business Insider reported that the Trump administration imposed the controls after high-level meetings raised security-vulnerability concerns, and the White House gave Anthropic a 90-minute window to shut down the newly launched model, as described by the Washington Post.
