Six injured in stabbing at New York Penn Station before NBA Finals
A stabbing at Penn Station injured six people on Sunday evening, prompting a suspect's arrest and heightened security measures ahead of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden.
Police said a suspect was taken into custody after a stabbing incident at the West 33rd Street entrance to Penn Station around 7 p.m. on Sunday. Five victims were transported to Bellevue Hospital with injuries ranging from moderate to serious but not life‑threatening, while a sixth person was taken to another hospital.
The attack occurred as the city prepared for the NBA Finals, the first held at Madison Square Garden since 1999, with additional security deployments, camera monitoring and drone use already in place. Federal authorities have also been coordinating a detailed security plan for the event, which will be attended by former President Donald Trump.
Amtrak police responded to the scene and an investigation is ongoing, but Amtrak service was not disrupted, according to Mayor Zohran Mamdani. > "My heart is with everyone who was injured, their loved ones, and all those shaken by this unacceptable violence. I’m wishing each of the victims a full and speedy recovery," Mamdani said. > "I’m grateful to the Amtrak Police Department and the first responders who acted quickly to apprehend the suspect and provide emergency care," he added.
