Colorado River Faces Critical Water Shortages Amid Record-Low Snowpack

The Colorado River, supplying water to approximately 40 million people across the western United States, is confronting a severe crisis as record-low snowpack and prolonged drought conditions deplete its reservoirs.

This winter, the Rocky Mountains, which feed the river, experienced unprecedented warmth, resulting in minimal snowfall. Consequently, major reservoirs such as Lake Mead and Lake Powell have declined to critically low levels, with Lake Powell at 25% and Lake Mead at 34% of capacity.

In response, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation has initiated emergency measures, including releasing between 600,000 and one million acre-feet of water from Flaming Gorge Reservoir over the next year to bolster Lake Powell. Additionally, water releases from Lake Powell through Glen Canyon Dam have been reduced, affecting downstream flows into Lake Mead.

The seven states within the Colorado River Basin—Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming—have struggled to reach a consensus on water usage reductions. A critical federal deadline on February 14 passed without an agreement, prompting the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation to consider imposing its own solution.

In early May, California, Arizona, and Nevada proposed voluntary water-saving measures for the next three years, aiming to conserve 3.2 million acre-feet of water through 2028. This plan seeks to stabilize water supplies while broader negotiations continue.

Experts warn that without significant, long-term changes in water use, the Colorado River could become catastrophically overdrawn, threatening agriculture, hydropower, and urban water supplies across the region.
