Astronomers Discovered Thin Atmosphere on Kuiper Belt Object 2002 XV93
Astronomers initially identified a thin atmosphere surrounding the small trans-Neptunian object (612533) 2002 XV93 located in the Kuiper Belt. This discovery challenged previous assumptions that such small distant bodies could not retain atmospheres. The detection was made through observations including stellar occultation techniques.
Later, Japanese astronomers from the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan confirmed the presence of this unexpected atmosphere, marking the first such finding beyond Pluto. This discovery has significant implications for understanding atmospheric retention on small Kuiper Belt objects and may prompt revisions to existing theories about these distant solar system bodies.
