Los astrónomos identificaron inicialmente una atmósfera tenue alrededor del pequeño objeto transneptuniano (612533) 2002 XV93 ubicado en el Cinturón de Kuiper. Este hallazgo desafió las suposiciones previas de que tales cuerpos pequeños y distantes no podían retener atmósferas. La detección se realizó mediante observaciones que incluyeron técnicas de ocultación estelar.

Posteriormente, astrónomos japoneses del Observatorio Astronómico Nacional de Japón confirmaron la presencia de esta atmósfera inesperada, marcando el primer hallazgo de este tipo más allá de Plutón. Este descubrimiento tiene implicaciones significativas para comprender la retención atmosférica en pequeños objetos del Cinturón de Kuiper y podría provocar revisiones en las teorías existentes sobre estos cuerpos distantes del sistema solar.
