Mali's Military Leader Meets Russian Ambassador Amidst Aftermath of Coordinated Rebel Attacks

Resumen

Mali's military leader Assimi Goita met with Russian Ambassador Igor Gromyko following coordinated attacks by insurgent groups, marking his first public appearance since the assaults.

Mali's military leader, Assimi Goita, met with Russian Ambassador Igor Gromyko on Tuesday, marking his first public appearance since coordinated attacks by insurgent groups over the weekend.

The assaults, carried out by West Africa's al-Qaeda affiliate and a Tuareg-dominated separatist group, targeted Mali's main army base and areas near Bamako's airport. Additionally, Russian soldiers supporting government forces were driven out of Kidal in the north.

Mali's Defense Minister, Sadio Camara, was killed during the attacks. The scale and coordination of the offensive demonstrated an unprecedented ability to unite fighters from different groups with varying goals, striking at the heart of the military government.

In response, Russia's Defense Ministry claimed that its Africa Corps units prevented a coup attempt during the attacks, stating that they inflicted "irreparable losses" on the enemy, thereby preserving the authority of the legitimate government and preventing mass civilian casualties.

The Malian government has stated that the situation is under control.
