Malian Defense Minister Killed Amid Coordinated Rebel and Jihadist Attacks
Malian Defense Minister Gen. Sadio Camara was killed during coordinated attacks by separatist and jihadist forces, leading to the withdrawal of Malian and Russian troops from Kidal.
Malian Defense Minister Gen. Sadio Camara was killed during a series of coordinated attacks by separatist and jihadist forces on Saturday. The assaults targeted multiple locations, including Bamako's international airport and several cities across central and northern Mali, resulting in at least 16 injuries.
The Tuareg-led Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) and the al-Qaida-linked group Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) claimed joint responsibility for the attacks. FLA spokesperson Mohamed El Maouloud Ramadan stated that the operation was conducted in partnership with JNIM to defend the people against the military regime in Bamako.
Following the attacks, Malian troops and Russian mercenaries withdrew from the northern city of Kidal after reaching an agreement for a peaceful exit. Ramadan declared Kidal "free" after the withdrawal.
In response to the violence, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) condemned the attacks and called for regional unity to combat extremism. The Malian government imposed a three-day overnight curfew in Bamako to address the unrest.
Analysts suggest that the coordinated nature of the attacks and the alliance between separatists and jihadists indicate a significant escalation in Mali's ongoing conflict. The situation underscores the challenges faced by the Malian government and its international partners in stabilizing the region.
