NASA's Artemis II mission is poised to launch on April 1, 2026, marking the first crewed lunar mission since 1972. The 10-day journey will see four astronauts aboard the Orion spacecraft, propelled by the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket, embark on a flyby around the Moon without landing. This mission aims to test critical systems, including life support and navigation, in preparation for future lunar landings.

The Artemis II crew comprises NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman (commander), Victor Glover (pilot), Christina Koch (mission specialist), and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen (mission specialist). Glover will become the first Black astronaut to travel beyond low Earth orbit, Koch the first woman, and Hansen the first non-American to reach the lunar vicinity.

The mission will follow a free-return trajectory, traveling approximately 250,000 miles from Earth, surpassing previous human spaceflight distances. After launch from Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the crew will conduct system checks in Earth orbit before proceeding to the Moon. The spacecraft will fly around the Moon's far side, where communications with Earth will be temporarily lost, and then use the Moon's gravity to return to Earth, culminating in a Pacific Ocean splashdown.

Artemis II builds upon the uncrewed Artemis I mission of 2022 and serves as a critical step toward NASA's goal of establishing a sustained human presence on and around the Moon. The mission also highlights international collaboration, with Hansen's participation reflecting the partnership between NASA and the Canadian Space Agency.

"This mission is a pivotal moment in our commitment to deep space exploration," said NASA's chief historian, Brian Odom. "It builds on the legacy of past space pioneers while pushing the boundaries further toward Mars and the dream of a spacefaring civilization."
