Ghana's Security Services Face Overwhelming Demand Amid Economic Challenges

Résumé

Over 500,000 applicants vie for 5,000 positions in Ghana's security services, highlighting deep-seated economic issues and high youth unemployment.

Ghana's security services are experiencing an unprecedented surge in applications, with more than 500,000 individuals competing for just 5,000 available positions. Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak disclosed that the applicants include approximately 75,000 university graduates and over 330,000 senior high school leavers.

"I checked from the portal; graduates alone who applied were 75,000, and those with SHS qualification, 330,000," he stated.

The minister acknowledged the overwhelming interest but emphasized the government's limited capacity to employ all qualified candidates due to current economic constraints. He noted that about 105,000 applicants have progressed to the medical examination stage, yet only 5,000 will be recruited in this phase.

Development economist Fred Dzanku interprets this intense competition as indicative of deeper structural weaknesses in Ghana's economy. He highlighted the manufacturing sector's minimal contribution to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which hampers job creation for the youth.

"As a country, our manufacturing value-added share of our GDP is less than 10%. So where are the jobs going to come from?" he questioned.

Prof. Dzanku criticized the tendency to address problems only when they become urgent, advocating for proactive measures to tackle the root causes of unemployment.

"We see a problem, and then we talk about it a little bit, and then we go back to sleep," he remarked.

The current recruitment process involves body selection and documentation, with limited vacancies dictated by fiscal realities. The government plans to retain the details of qualified candidates for future recruitment phases, aiming to address the employment challenges as the country's fiscal space improves.
