Shell CEO Warns of Potential Fuel Rationing in Europe Amid Strait of Hormuz Closure

Summary

Shell's CEO, Wael Sawan, cautions that Europe may face fuel shortages and rationing if the Strait of Hormuz remains closed, disrupting vital oil and gas shipments.

Europe may encounter fuel shortages and potential rationing as early as next month if the Strait of Hormuz remains closed, disrupting critical oil and gas shipments, according to Shell's Chief Executive Officer, Wael Sawan.

Sawan highlighted the escalating impact of the closure, noting that South Asia was initially affected, followed by Southeast and Northeast Asia, with Europe potentially facing similar challenges by April. He emphasized that the Strait of Hormuz serves as a crucial artery for global energy flows, and any blockage could have a significant impact on global trade.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) has labeled the current Middle East conflict and the resulting closure of the Strait of Hormuz as the "greatest global energy security threat in history." The crisis has disrupted vital oil and gas flows, paralyzing about 11 million barrels of oil per day—more than the combined losses of the 1973 and 1979 oil shocks.

Germany's Economy Minister, Katherina Reiche, echoed these concerns, warning that energy supply scarcity could occur in late April or May if the conflict continues. She added that Germany's decision to phase out nuclear energy was a significant mistake and emphasized the importance of increasing gas imports via super-chilled tankers from overseas.

The looming threat to Europe's energy supplies could lead to a prolonged global economic recession if oil prices reach $150 a barrel, according to Larry Fink, CEO of BlackRock. He stated that if Iran remains a threat and oil prices stay high, it will have profound implications for the world economy.

In response to the crisis, the IEA has released 400 million barrels from emergency reserves and issued practical conservation advice. However, IEA Chief Fatih Birol stressed that restoring shipping through the Strait of Hormuz remains the only true solution to resolving this unprecedented energy crisis.
