NASA Highlights Gaps in Tracking Medium-Sized Near-Earth Asteroids

Résumé

NASA's planetary defense chief, Dr. Kelly Fast, reports that approximately 15,000 medium-sized near-Earth asteroids remain untracked, posing potential regional threats.

NASA's planetary defense chief, Dr. Kelly Fast, has reported that approximately 15,000 medium-sized near-Earth asteroids, each around 140 meters wide, remain untracked. These asteroids could cause significant regional damage if they were to impact populated areas. Speaking at the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) conference in Arizona, Dr. Fast emphasized the concern over these unaccounted-for objects. She noted that while smaller meteors frequently enter Earth's atmosphere without major consequences, and larger asteroids are well-monitored, it's the medium-sized ones that pose a significant risk due to their potential for regional damage. Dr. Fast stated that it's estimated there are about 25,000 of these asteroids, and currently, only about 40% have been identified. She highlighted the challenges in detecting these objects, even with advanced telescopes. Dr. Nancy Chabot of Johns Hopkins University, who led the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART), also expressed concern over the lack of preparedness for deflecting such asteroids. She mentioned that while DART was a successful demonstration, there isn't a comparable craft ready for deployment in the event of a real threat. Dr. Chabot emphasized the need for investment in planetary defense to prepare for potential future threats.
