ICE Officer Fatally Shoots Woman in Minneapolis Amid Immigration Crackdown
A 37-year-old woman was shot and killed by an ICE officer during a traffic stop in Minneapolis, sparking protests and calls for federal agents to leave the city.
A 37-year-old woman was fatally shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer during a traffic stop in Minneapolis on Wednesday. The incident occurred in a residential neighborhood south of downtown, near historic immigrant markets and approximately a mile from where George Floyd was killed in 2020. The shooting has ignited protests and intensified debates over federal immigration enforcement in the city.
According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the woman attempted to run over ICE officers with her vehicle, prompting an agent to fire in self-defense. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem described the event as an "act of domestic terrorism," stating that the woman "attempted to run them over and rammed them with her vehicle. An officer of ours acted quickly and defensively, shot, to protect himself and the people around him."
However, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey contested this characterization, labeling the federal narrative as "garbage" after reviewing video footage of the incident. He criticized the deployment of over 2,000 federal agents to the Twin Cities as part of the immigration crackdown, asserting that their presence is "causing chaos and distrust." Frey called for ICE to leave Minneapolis, stating, "They’re ripping families apart. They’re sowing chaos on our streets, and in this case, quite literally killing people."
Videos captured by bystanders show an officer approaching an SUV stopped in the middle of the road, demanding the driver open the door. As the vehicle begins to move forward, another ICE officer standing in front of it draws his weapon and fires at least two shots into the vehicle at close range. The SUV then crashes into parked cars before coming to a stop. It is unclear from the videos whether the vehicle made contact with the officer.
The woman, identified as Renee Nicole Good, was transported to a hospital where she was pronounced dead. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara confirmed that she was shot in the head and stated there is no indication that she was the target of any law enforcement investigation or activity.
The incident has sparked significant public outcry, with hundreds of protesters gathering at the scene, chanting slogans such as "Shame! Shame! Shame!" and "ICE out of Minnesota." Minnesota Governor Tim Walz expressed outrage over the shooting, describing it as "predictable" and "avoidable," while urging protesters to remain peaceful.
This marks at least the fifth fatality linked to federal immigration crackdowns since 2024. State authorities have announced an investigation into the shooting, with Commissioner Bob Jacobson of the Minnesota Department of Public Safety stating, "Keep in mind that this is an investigation that is also in its infancy. So any speculation about what has happened would be just that."
