ICE officer kills Colombian driver in Biddeford during deportation pursuit
A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer shot and killed a 26-year-old Colombian man in Biddeford, Maine, after he allegedly attempted to use his vehicle against agents. The incident is under investigation by state and federal authorities.
A federal immigration officer shot and killed a 26-year-old Colombian national in Biddeford, Maine, on Monday, marking the second fatal use of force by ICE in a week. According to Senator Angus King, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said the driver tried to "weaponize" his vehicle while officers were pursuing him for a deportation order.
The Maine attorney general’s office, the FBI and other agencies are investigating. Initial statements indicate the driver was attempting to flee in the direction of the agent when he was shot. The ICE officer involved has been placed on leave.
Advocacy groups, including the Maine Immigrants’ Rights Coalition and Presente!, said the deceased was authorized to work in the United States and possessed a Social Security number. The family has not spoken publicly about the incident.
Security cameras near the scene captured the vehicle rolling into an intersection after shots were fired, showing bullet holes in the windshield. No body-worn camera footage is available from the agents involved.
Local residents and protesters gathered near the site, expressing grief and calling for accountability. Demonstrators held signs criticizing ICE and the federal immigration enforcement approach.
The shooting is the ninth death linked to federal immigration officials since the start of the current administration’s immigration enforcement surge, which has seen a rise in arrests nationwide. ICE reported 546 arrests in Maine between the start of the administration and March 2026, with about 45% of those individuals having criminal backgrounds.
State and federal officials say the investigation will determine whether the use of deadly force was justified and have pledged transparency in the process.
