ICE Officer Fatally Shoots 26-Year-Old Colombian Man in Biddeford

Summary

A 26-year-old Colombian immigrant was killed by ICE agents during an attempted vehicle stop in Biddeford, Maine, prompting statements from the Colombian embassy and inquiries from U.S. officials.

ICE agents shot and killed a 26-year-old Colombian man in Biddeford, Maine, on Monday morning while attempting to stop his vehicle. The victim, identified by the Maine Immigrant Rights Coalition as Joan Sebastian Guerrero, left behind a wife, a three-year-old child and a sister. The coalition said Guerrero was authorized to work in the United States and held a social security number.

The Department of Homeland Security said agents were conducting targeted surveillance at the man's last known address in connection with a final removal order. According to a DHS spokesperson, the driver left the residence in a vehicle, ignored attempts to stop it, and agents fired because they feared for public safety.

Senator Angus King’s office reported that the senator spoke with Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, who indicated Guerrero was not the specific target of the warrant. The Colombian embassy said its consular officials are in contact with U.S. authorities and community groups to confirm the individual's identity and determine appropriate consular procedures.

As of Tuesday morning, investigators had not released further details about the incident.
