Gas Line Rupture in Castaic Causes 5 Freeway Closure and Shelter-in-Place Order
A natural gas pipeline rupture in Castaic led to the temporary closure of the 5 Freeway and a shelter-in-place order for nearby residents, with no reported injuries.
A natural gas pipeline rupture occurred in Castaic on Saturday afternoon, leading to the closure of the 5 Freeway and a shelter-in-place order for local residents. The incident was reported around 4:20 p.m. near Ridge Route Road and Pine Crest Place, just north of Lake Hughes Road.
Los Angeles County Fire Department officials responded to reports of an explosion and a strong gas odor. Upon arrival, they discovered a 34-inch natural gas transmission line had ruptured. The cause of the rupture remains under investigation, though significant land movement was observed near the break.
SoCalGas crews isolated the damaged section of the pipeline, stopping the leak. A spokesperson stated, "Once remaining natural gas in the damaged pipeline section is safely vented, crews will assess the damage and make repairs to the pipeline."
As a precaution, authorities issued a shelter-in-place order for residents within a one-mile radius of the rupture, advising them to close doors, windows, and vents, and to turn off HVAC systems. This order was lifted around 10 p.m.
The California Highway Patrol closed all lanes of the 5 Freeway in both directions, diverting northbound traffic to State Route 126 and southbound traffic to State Route 138. The freeway reopened at approximately 8:45 p.m.
No injuries have been reported. Residents in nearby communities may continue to notice a natural gas odor as the remaining gas dissipates.
