Gas Line Rupture in Castaic Causes I-5 Closure and Shelter-in-Place Order
A natural gas line rupture in Castaic led to the temporary closure of Interstate 5 and a shelter-in-place order for nearby residents, with no injuries reported.
A natural gas line rupture occurred near the 5 Freeway in Castaic, California, on Saturday afternoon, prompting authorities to close the freeway and issue a shelter-in-place order for nearby residents. The incident was reported around 4:20 p.m. near Ridge Route Road and Pine Crest Place.
The rupture involved a 34-inch transmission pipeline operated by Southern California Gas Company. The cause of the break is currently under investigation.
In response, the California Highway Patrol closed all lanes of the 5 Freeway in both directions, diverting northbound traffic to State Route 126 and southbound traffic to State Route 138. The freeway was reopened around 8:45 p.m.
A shelter-in-place order was issued for residents in the immediate area, advising them to stay indoors, close all doors, windows, and vents, and turn off HVAC systems. This order was lifted around 10 p.m.
No injuries have been reported. SoCalGas crews isolated the affected section of the pipeline to mitigate the leak. A spokesperson stated that once the remaining natural gas in the damaged pipeline section is safely vented, crews will assess the damage and make repairs.
Residents in areas such as Granada Hills, Porter Ranch, and Sylmar reported smelling gas from their homes. The Los Angeles Fire Department indicated that there was no immediate threat to the city due to the gas leak.
The cause of the rupture remains under investigation. Hazmat personnel are conducting readings in the area to ensure safety.
