Genocide Scholars' Association Declares Israel's Actions in Gaza Constitute Genocide
The International Association of Genocide Scholars has passed a resolution stating that Israel's military operations in Gaza meet the legal definition of genocide, a claim Israel strongly denies.
The International Association of Genocide Scholars (IAGS), a leading global body of genocide experts, has passed a resolution asserting that Israel's military actions in Gaza meet the legal definition of genocide. The resolution, supported by 86% of voting members, accuses Israel of systematic crimes against humanity and war crimes, including targeted attacks on civilians and infrastructure in Gaza.
The conflict began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas militants attacked Israeli communities, resulting in 1,200 deaths and over 250 hostages. In response, Israel launched a large-scale military campaign in Gaza, leading to over 63,000 Palestinian deaths, mass displacement, and widespread famine, according to Palestinian officials.
Israel's Foreign Ministry has rejected the IAGS resolution, calling it "disgraceful" and an "embarrassment to the legal profession." The ministry accused the organization of basing its findings on unverified information and misrepresenting the International Court of Justice's position.
The IAGS resolution adds to similar accusations by other international human rights groups and Israeli NGOs. A case regarding these claims is currently before the International Court of Justice, though enforcement of any potential ruling could be limited due to political complexities at the UN Security Council.
