Trump proposes $5,000 payout to adults if GOP wins midterms

President Donald Trump told a crowd at the Republican Party’s midterm convention in Dallas that he would issue a $5,000 "dividend" to every adult U.S. citizen if Republicans win control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate. > "Here is my promise: if the Republicans win the House of Representatives and the United States Senate, both of them… because of our tremendous strength and success economically, I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000," Trump said.

Analysts estimate the payout would exceed $1 trillion, raising questions about funding sources and the impact on the federal budget, which is already facing a deficit of about $1.8 trillion for the current fiscal year. The cost would be comparable to the $1.27 trillion spent on interest on the national debt to date and the $1.36 trillion projected for defense spending in 2026.

Legal experts note that federal law prohibits offering money to influence voting behavior, with violations punishable by fines and imprisonment. The White House was contacted for comment on whether the proposed dividend would violate those statutes.

The idea follows previous, unimplemented proposals by Trump, including a $5,000 "DOGE dividend" and a $2,000 tariff rebate, both of which were never enacted. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the federal government distributed large-scale stimulus checks, a policy that some economists say contributed to later inflationary pressures.
