Summary

President Donald Trump announced a $5,000 payment to adult U.S. citizens contingent on a Republican win in the midterms, but a recent poll finds only about one-fifth of voters believe the promise will be fulfilled.

President Donald Trump has said a $5,000 "Trump Dividend" would be paid to every adult U.S. citizen if Republicans win both chambers of Congress in the upcoming midterm elections. The proposal was first outlined at a Republican convention in Dallas on Sept. 9 and later reiterated in posts on his Truth Social platform.

The size of the payout would depend on the eligibility definition. Paying all adult citizens—estimated at roughly 270 million people—would cost about $1.3 trillion, while extending the payment to all U.S. citizens would raise the cost to more than $1.7 trillion. Trump has cited the $21 trillion in recent federal investments as a context for the dividend’s affordability.

A joint Economist-YouGov poll conducted in September found that only 21 percent of registered voters think the dividend would definitely or probably be issued if Republicans retain control of Congress, while 57 percent think it probably or definitely would not. Among likely voters, 61 percent expressed doubt the payment would be delivered. Support for the proposal is split, with 45 percent opposing it and 43 percent in favor.

When asked for clarification on eligibility, White House spokesperson Davis Ingle responded that Trump has “consistently proven his doubters wrong” and that he will continue delivering “real results” with public support.

“If the Republicans win, you win with us and you get $5,000,” Trump said at the Dallas convention.

“If Republicans win the House of Representatives and the Senate in the 2026 Midterm Elections, I’m going to give all Adult Citizens in the United States of America, $5,000,” he posted on Oct. 3.

The proposal follows earlier suggestions by Trump for direct payments that have not materialized, such as a 2025 plan to distribute a $5,000 “DOGE dividend” tied to projected savings that never materialized.
