Eagles aim to extend perfect start against Commanders in Week 1
Philadelphia, unbeaten in its first games under coach Nick Sirianni, will face Washington, whose run defense has struggled and whose offensive line is dealing with injuries.
The Philadelphia Eagles, 5-0 in opening-week games since Nick Sirianni became head coach, will open the season against division rival Washington Commanders. Analysts note that Washington allowed the third-most rushing yards per game last season and has made limited offseason moves to improve its front seven, including signing edge rushers Odafe Oweh and K'Lavon Chaisson and releasing veteran linebacker Bobby Wagner.
"The Commanders' run defense has been porous, giving up 141.5 rushing yards per game last season," a football analyst said.
Washington’s projected secondary also faces challenges, with top corner Trey Amos on the injured reserve list and likely replaced by veteran Rasul Douglas. The team changed defensive coordinators, appointing Daronte Jones, though the scheme retains elements of Dan Quinn’s previous system.
The Commanders have relied heavily on the ground game, ranking fourth in the league for rushing attempts last season. Running backs Jacory Crosky-Merritt and Rachaad White provide a mix of power and receiving ability, while quarterback Jayden Daniels adds a rushing threat.
Both teams feature veteran receivers. Washington’s Terry McLaurin and Stefon Diggs, each in their early thirties, are seeking to rebound after sub-par recent seasons.
Washington’s offensive line is dealing with significant turnover and injuries. Left tackle Laremy Tunsil is out with a triceps injury, and replacements Brandon Coleman and Chris Paul have limited experience at their positions. Center Nick Allegretti, moved from guard, is recovering from a calf injury, and right tackle Josh Conerly struggled in his rookie season.
The matchup presents an opportunity for the Eagles to establish their running attack against a defense that has shown vulnerabilities, while also testing their revamped passing scheme that incorporates more motion and play-action.
