Investors Anticipate Fed Rate Hike as Job Gains Remain Steady

Market betting odds show a majority expect a 25 basis-point increase at the September Federal Reserve meeting, while recent employment data and inflation pressures fuel the outlook.

Around 60% of futures market participants are pricing in a 25-basis-point rise in the federal funds rate to between 3.75% and 4.00% at the September 16 meeting, according to CME FedWatch data. The remaining traders forecast that the board, led by Kevin Warsh, will hold rates steady.

The latest Bureau of Labor Statistics report showed the economy added 162,000 jobs in August, leaving the unemployment rate unchanged at 4.1%, bolstering expectations of tighter monetary policy. However, inflation remains above the Fed’s 2% target, with the 12-month consumer price index standing at 3.4%.

Analysts expect the upcoming core personal consumption expenditures price index to influence the decision. Bank of America noted that a core reading of 0.24% month-over-month or higher could push hike odds above 50%, and a missed increase might raise concerns about the Fed’s credibility and lift long-term yields.

Macquarie’s David Doyle moved his baseline scenario for the first 25-basis-point hike forward to September, previously forecasting a December move, and still sees a second hike in the first quarter of 2027. UBS projects two hikes this year, in September and December, and its chief investment officer emphasized that the economic context of any rate change will be more consequential for portfolios than the timing alone.

"The important question is not whether rates move higher, but what is the backdrop against which they do," wrote Mark Haefele of UBS.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has been conducting Treasury buybacks, a strategy that could be affected if yields rise following a rate increase.

President Donald Trump, who has publicly advocated for lower rates, posted on his social-media platform that high interest rates place the United States at a competitive disadvantage and warned of potential trade actions if rates do not fall. The administration’s stance reflects a broader push for a more dovish monetary stance, though it contrasts with market expectations of a near-term hike.
