Nebraska defeats Ohio 49-21 in season-opening showdown

Resumen

The Cornhuskers overcame a slow start to beat the Ohio Bobcats 49-21, highlighted by strong second-half scoring and a standout performance by transfer quarterback Anthony Colandrea.

Nebraska rallied in the second half of its season-opening game at Memorial Stadium, outscoring Ohio 35-8 after halftime to secure a 49-21 victory. The win marked the Huskers’ 100th triumph in a season opener. Temperatures rose above 130 °F on the field during the latter stages of the contest.

Nebraska struggled early, committing several penalties and failing to convert on third down. Ohio opened the scoring on a 68-yard pass play, and led 13-7 at halftime. Coach Matt Rhule acknowledged defensive miscommunication, saying > "the secondary was in man-to-man except one defender who was in a zone defense."

The Huskers’ offense found rhythm after the break, scoring touchdowns on their final five possessions, including 21 points in the last 12 minutes of the fourth quarter. Transfer quarterback Anthony Colandrea completed 18 of 32 passes for 275 yards and three touchdowns, adding a 13-yard rushing TD for a total of 298 yards of offense. Freshman running back Jamal Rule rushed for 122 yards on 15 carries and added two touchdowns, becoming the first freshman to exceed 100 rushing yards in a Nebraska season opener since 2004.

Nebraska’s defense tightened, limiting Ohio to 61 yards after the half and recording eight pass breakups, the most since a game in October 2024. Defensive back Jamir Conn led the unit with eight tackles and a pass breakup.

Special teams saw mixed results, with the kicking unit handling extra points flawlessly while kickoff and punt coverage required adjustments.

Looking ahead, Nebraska prepares to face Bowling Green next week, aiming to build on the momentum from its decisive second-half performance.
