Nebraska posts 56-7 victory over Bowling Green as offense balances rushing and passing
Nebraska defeated Bowling Green 56-7, recording over 200 yards both on the ground and through the air, while coaches highlighted the need for defensive development.
Nebraska recorded a 56-7 win over Bowling Green on Saturday, posting more than 200 yards rushing and 200 yards passing for the second consecutive game. Quarterback Anthony Colandrea completed 17 of 20 attempts for four touchdowns and 204 total yards in the first half, while the running backs each carried the ball eight times in a 34-carry ground attack.
Wide receiver Jacory Barney caught eight passes for 115 yards, and Kwazi Gilmer added a touchdown reception. The Huskers’ second-team offense also contributed, completing a 12-play, 79-yard drive that ended with a touchdown pass to Kwinten Ives.
Head coach Matt Rhule noted that the team was unable to field the third-team offense for much of the third quarter, during which Bowling Green held possession for more than 11 minutes. Defensive coordinator Rob Aurich said the unit is still in a developmental phase and will need to improve consistency, citing a few extended drives by the opponent as areas for growth.
Nebraska’s offensive line saw increased participation from several backups, and the team’s special-teams unit recorded a blocked punt but struggled to contain Bowling Green’s return unit. Coach Brett Maher’s kicking game faced penalties early in the season.
The victory gave Nebraska a 49-point margin of win, providing a positive start to the season as the Huskers look ahead to a tougher conference schedule.
