Colorado man arrested after hit-and-run while on bond for wife's murder case

摘要

Barry Morphew, who was out on a $3 million bond pending trial for the alleged killing of his wife, was taken into custody after a Denver hit-and-run incident.

Barry Morphew was booked into the Boulder County Jail after prosecutors said he was involved in a hit-and-run crash with two other vehicles in Denver on Aug. 28. The incident occurred while he was traveling to Denver International Airport, possibly to pick up his daughter, which district attorneys say violates the terms of his bond that restrict travel outside southern Colorado except for work.

Alamosa County District Judge Amanda Hopkins has scheduled a hearing to review Morphew’s bond. The bond, set last year at $3 million, required him to remain in the area except for limited reasons, and the court filing by District Attorney Anne Kelly described the airport trip as a breach of those conditions.

Morphew, who has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder in his wife Suzanne Morphew’s death, is slated for trial next summer. Suzanne’s skeletal remains were discovered in 2023, and investigators reported no trauma but detected traces of a wildlife tranquilizer in her bone marrow. Prosecutors noted that Morphew was the only person besides wildlife officials authorized to use the chemicals.

His attorneys have not responded to requests for comment.
