Uber to cut about 3,300 jobs, about 10% of workforce, in latest restructuring

Uber announced plans to lay off roughly 3,300 employees, representing 10% of its staff, as part of a restructuring aimed at simplifying its organization and focusing on growth opportunities.

Uber said it will eliminate about 3,300 positions, or roughly one-tenth of its global workforce, in a restructuring effort announced by chief executive Dara Khosrowshahi in a letter to staff. The company, which reported around 34,000 employees in more than 70 countries last year, aims to reduce layers of management, streamline team structures and concentrate resources on what it calls its biggest opportunities.

Khosrowshahi wrote, “We are removing layers, simplifying team structures, refining our global location strategy, and focusing our people and investments against the biggest opportunities ahead of us. This wasn’t a decision we made lightly.”

The layoffs will also target roles primarily involved in coordination, with the number of very small teams cut by half, according to the CEO. Uber said the changes should speed decision-making and clarify ownership responsibilities.

In addition, the firm is asking most remote workers to return to a hybrid schedule that requires three days per week in the office, reducing the share of fully remote staff to about one percent.

Shares rose a little over 2% to around $77 in midday trading after the announcement, even as the stock has fallen about 6% this year while the broader Nasdaq index has risen more than 12%.
