Bond Market Strains Under Record Supply, Driving Yields Higher

सारांश

Analysts say an unprecedented flow of new debt from the U.S. government and tech companies is pushing bond yields to multi-year highs, raising borrowing costs across the economy.

Bond yields rose sharply on Wednesday, with the 10-year U.S. Treasury reaching 4.81%, its highest level in nearly three years, as a surge of new debt overwhelms the market. Macquarie Group attributes the sell-off largely to the volume of bonds issued, noting that both Washington and major technology firms are tapping the market to fund fiscal needs and AI-related investments.

According to LSEG data, companies such as Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, Microsoft and Oracle have issued about $220 billion of debt so far this year to finance data centers and artificial-intelligence projects. That supply adds to the government’s borrowing, which has risen as federal debt tops $40 trillion for the first time.

Macquarie strategists Thierry Wizman and Gareth Berry said traders are concerned about “the orderly absorption of a higher supply of bonds indefinitely, especially with the existing surfeit of corporate high-grade bonds coming to market in Q3 and Q4.” They expect AI-driven spending to keep corporate bond issuance elevated for the next two years, while personal savings remain modest, suggesting yields may stay elevated.

Higher yields affect the broader economy because they influence the cost of mortgages, student loans and car financing, potentially dampening consumer spending and slowing growth. The rise also pressures equity markets, as higher rates reduce investors’ willingness to pay premium prices for stocks.
