Uber to cut 10% of workforce in restructuring effort

Résumé

Uber announced plans to lay off roughly 3,300 employees, about one-tenth of its global staff, as it streamlines management and refocuses investment on ride-sharing, delivery and robotaxi operations.

Uber disclosed that it will eliminate approximately 3,300 positions, representing around 10% of its worldwide headcount, in a restructuring aimed at reducing management layers and directing more resources to its core ride-sharing, delivery and robotaxi businesses. The plan was outlined in an internal email from CEO Dara Khosrowshahi that was later posted online.

The company said the restructuring will cut the number of managers by 20% and convert some of those roles into individual contributor positions. It also intends to halve the number of teams that consist of only one or two members and to discontinue remote work for most staff, limiting it to less than 1% of the workforce.

"We’ve built new products, expanded into new businesses, reached more consumers and supported more earners, and become a much larger and stronger company. But that growth has also brought complexity: more layers, more coordination, more fragmented ownership, and in some cases structures that made sense when businesses were smaller but no longer serve us well at our current scale," Khosrowshahi wrote.

The changes include merging Uber’s engineering, science and delivery divisions and consolidating delivery operations across restaurant, retail and direct channels.
