Stan Kroenke to Acquire Los Angeles Angels in $4 Billion Deal, MLB’s Costliest Sale

Summary

Billionaire Stan Kroenke’s sports group agreed to purchase the Los Angeles Angels for more than $4 billion, surpassing previous MLB franchise sales and pending MLB approval.

Los Angeles – Stan Kroenke Sports & Entertainment announced Tuesday that it will buy the Los Angeles Angels for a reported $4 billion, the highest price ever paid for a Major League Baseball franchise. The transaction, which must be approved by MLB and is expected to close in early 2027, exceeds the $3.9 billion deal for the San Diego Padres and the $2.4 billion purchase of the New York Mets.

"The Angels are a storied franchise anchored in a great market. We look forward to an exciting future with the Angels organization," Kroenke said in a statement.

Arte Moreno, who purchased the club in 2003 for $184 million, issued a brief statement saying the Moreno family was honored to have stewarded the team for 23 years and that KSE’s experience makes it the "best next owner" for the franchise.

The Angels have not reached the postseason since 2014, marking the longest active playoff drought in baseball. The ownership change comes as the team seeks to rebuild its roster and farm system under the new ownership group, which also owns the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams, the NBA’s Denver Nuggets and the NHL’s Colorado Avalanche.

The sale will be subject to standard MLB review procedures before becoming final.
