Shailene Woodley Says Her Mary Jane Scenes Were Cut from The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Résumé

The actress revealed that footage of her as Mary Jane Watson was removed from the 2014 sequel after filming with Andrew Garfield, and the character has not been reintroduced in the franchise.

Shailene Woodley told members of the SAG-AFTRA union that her scenes as Mary Jane Watson were filmed for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 but were later eliminated during post-production. She said she had shot three sequences with Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker before being informed a year later that the character would be postponed for a future film that never materialized. Woodley explained that the studio decided to wait for a storyline involving Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy before re-introducing Mary Jane, but the planned sequel was cancelled, leaving the role unused.

Garfield, who reprised his Spider-Man in the 2021 crossover No Way Home, has said he would not return for the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday project, though he has not ruled out future involvement in his own Spider-Man continuity, which could eventually bring Woodley’s Mary Jane to the screen.
