Shailene Woodley says Mary Jane scenes were cut from The Amazing Spider-Man 2
Actress Shailene Woodley explained that her filmed scenes as Mary Jane Watson were removed from the 2014 Spider-Man sequel after the studio decided to focus on other storylines.
Actress Shailene Woodley told the SAG-AFTRA Foundation that she learned a year after filming that her scenes with Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker were omitted from the 2014 release of The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Woodley said she was initially excited about being cast as Mary Jane, a character she admired growing up, but was later informed that the studio planned to introduce the role only after the film’s primary romance between Peter and Gwen Stacy concluded. The decision, she said, was linked to the studio’s intention to wait for Gwen’s storyline to end before re-introducing Mary Jane, a plan that never materialized because a third installment was never produced.
Director Marc Webb confirmed that the cuts were made to streamline the narrative and keep the focus on Peter and Gwen’s relationship. The removal of Woodley’s scenes was reported in 2013, and the film’s underperformance led Sony to cancel further sequels in that series. Garfield later reprised the Spider-Man role in the 2021 crossover "Spider-Man: No Way Home."
