Rockstar aims for heightened realism in GTA 6, shifting away from series' traditional arcade style
Rockstar Games is introducing more realistic mechanics to Grand Theft Auto 6, including changes to the wanted system, a criminal-profile feature and deeper relationship and health management, marking a significant departure from previous titles.
Rockstar Games is steering Grand Theft Auto 6 toward a level of realism comparable to its Red Dead Redemption 2 title, according to information released ahead of the game's Netflix showcase. The upcoming installment is set to replace the series' classic high-speed police evasion with a wanted system that may require players to alter their appearance, vehicle or even flee on foot, as co-studio head Rob Nelson explained.
A new "Criminal Profile" mechanic is reported to track player actions and influence NPC reactions, limiting the ability to cause chaos without consequence. Relationship dynamics will also affect story outcomes, with small gestures such as holding a door open for a partner potentially altering narrative branches. Health and appearance are expected to be tied to player choices like diet, exercise and alcohol consumption.
Vehicle theft will become more complex; high-end cars are said to feature security systems and GPS trackers that can only be bypassed as players progress. Driving is expected to be more challenging due to denser, narrower roads that aim to reflect the real-world layout of Miami and surrounding Florida areas. Additional systems, such as a trunk storage mechanic and the need to refuel vehicles, suggest a move away from the series' traditional pick-up-and-play approach.
Industry observers note that the shift represents a substantial risk for a franchise known for its accessible, arcade-style gameplay, but also see it as an effort to align with recent successful titles that emphasize deeper mechanics and player engagement.
