Rockstar shares extensive new details on GTA 6 ahead of Netflix documentary
Rockstar Games disclosed gameplay mechanics, character backgrounds and development research for Grand Theft Auto VI in an interview with Dazed, coinciding with the launch of Netflix's "Grand Theft Auto 6: An Extended Look" documentary.
Rockstar Games provided a range of new information about Grand Theft Auto VI in an interview with Dazed, timed with the premiere of Netflix's documentary "Grand Theft Auto 6: An Extended Look." Development head Rob Nelson said the game will feature a dynamic world where player actions, such as carrying a rifle in public, have visible consequences. The protagonists, ex-military drug runner Jason and recently released inmate Lucia, can be played together as a couple or separately, with seamless character swapping during missions and even while driving.
Nelson described the narrative as a modern "Bonnie and Clyde" story that places the characters' relationship at its core. Choices are expected to have deeper repercussions than in previous Rockstar titles, and the studio aims to allow extensive player self-expression while preserving character integrity. Gameplay systems will include visible changes to muscle tone from exercising, weight fluctuations based on food intake, and physical effects from prolonged sleep deprivation, police chases or extended binge sessions.
The development team conducted on-site research in Miami and surrounding areas, consulting former criminals, law-enforcement officials, club promoters and gun dealers to inform the game's setting. Rockstar also hired over 50 street artists to create in-game murals and employed race-car drivers to fine-tune vehicle handling. New tools and pipelines were built to generate the most detailed and varied NPC population the studio has produced, featuring diverse body types, tattoos, piercings and cosmetic surgery.
Fashion will play a prominent role, with Miami-based stylist Jillian Carr, who has worked with Rockstar since 2023, helping to craft a "fashion ecosystem" reflecting the city's focus on vanity, social media influence and rapid trend cycles. The interview included brand-new screenshots showcasing outfit options for Jason and Lucia.
"The thing we love about this medium is the way these characters aren’t empty avatars that you can do whatever you want with. Their story becomes a journey you share with them," Nelson told Dazed.
"Vice City is built around vanity. Between social media, celebrity culture, and a constant flow of tourists, appearances carry significant weight, and trend cycles turn over quickly," Carr added.
Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look debuted on Netflix today.
