Rockstar details new features and narrative focus for Grand Theft Auto VI
Rockstar Games discusses the development of Grand Theft Auto VI, highlighting its new setting, playable couple protagonists, and increased world realism amid high expectations.
Rockstar Games said its upcoming open-world title Grand Theft Auto VI will move the series from the fictional Southern California-inspired San Andreas to a new Florida-based setting called Leonida. The game introduces two protagonists, ex-military drug runner Jason Duval and former inmate Lucia Caminos, who can be played together as a couple or separately, marking the first time a mainline GTA features a fully fleshed-out female lead.
Rob Nelson, head of development and co-studio head at Rockstar North, said the team feels "unprecedented pressure" to meet expectations, noting that the internal standards they set for themselves are even higher than external demands. He added that the studio is iterating on past titles, improving aspects that were limited by time, resources or technology.
The developers emphasized a more reactive world where player actions have visible consequences, such as NPCs responding to weapons drawn on the street. Physical attributes of the protagonists will change based on in-game activities like eating, exercising or prolonged exposure to danger, adding a layer of realism to the experience.
Narrative director Rupert Humphries described the story as a "Bonnie and Clyde-type narrative," focusing on the partnership between Jason and Lucia as they navigate criminal jobs, car chases and social media elements within the game. The setting draws on Miami’s diverse culture, with Rockstar staff conducting on-ground research and consulting local contacts to inform character design and in-game brands.
The team also highlighted expanded character diversity, noting that the virtual population will feature a broader range of appearances, clothing styles and behaviors than previous entries. Senior art director Jamie-Lee Lloyd said new tools and pipelines were developed to create this detailed pedestrian ecosystem.
Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for release on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
