Analysts warn Jackson Hole could spark dollar and bond sell-off

Market strategists say Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's remarks at the Jackson Hole symposium could shape expectations for monetary policy, potentially prompting a decline in the U.S. dollar and higher long-term Treasury yields.

Investors are closely watching the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City's annual symposium in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, where Fed Chair Kevin Warsh is slated to deliver a keynote address on Friday. The event follows a recent surge in long-term borrowing costs and a Treasury decision to double its buyback program for long-dated government debt to $4 billion per month starting Sept. 9.

Bank of America FX strategists warned that the dollar is "on edge" ahead of the meeting and could face an extended sell-off if Warsh disappoints markets. They described the Treasury's buyback announcement as a factor that temporarily eased a bond-market sell-off, noting that the 30-year Treasury yield was at 5.173% and the 10-year at about 4.64% on Wednesday morning.

The bank labeled Jackson Hole a "key risk event" for both bonds and the dollar, saying the Fed could help contain long-end yields by adopting a more hawkish stance or providing clearer guidance on inflation. > "We expect Chair Warsh to change his communication to help contain the bond. If he does not, we would be concerned about a potential rapid [long end] bond rise to 5.5%+," the note read.

Morgan Stanley economists expressed doubt that Warsh will offer new policy clues, stating he is likely to communicate less rather than clarify the near-term outlook. Stifel analysts predicted a dovish message that could steepen the yield curve and weaken the dollar.

Invesco's global head of research, Benjamin D. Jones, said he will listen for Warsh's balance of growth versus inflation, acknowledgment of rising term premia, and views on financial-innovation impacts. He noted that a dovish speech could support the front end of the curve but risk higher long-end yields and a weaker dollar, while a hawkish tone might bolster credibility but tighten conditions for consumers facing high gasoline prices.

Overall, analysts agree that multiple forces—including resilient nominal growth, persistent inflation risk, large sovereign financing needs, and competition for capital from AI-related investment—are pushing long-term yields higher, and they expect the path of least resistance to be further yield increases.
