PGA Tour to adopt two-week match-play Tour Championship starting in 2028

The PGA Tour said on Tuesday that its season-ending schedule will be overhauled for the 2028 campaign. The new structure will span three weeks, concluding with a two-week Tour Championship contested by the top 32 players on the season-long points list in a match-play format.

The regular season will end with the PGA Tour Championship Series Finale, a 72-hole stroke-play tournament for the leading 90 players, all of whom will keep their tour cards for the following season. Bonuses and awards will be finalized after this event.

During the first week of the Tour Championship, the 32 qualifiers will be divided into eight groups of four and play a round-robin group stage. The two best performers from each group will move on to the second week, which will feature a 16-player single-elimination bracket. The final two undefeated competitors will contest the championship, with all 16 participants playing four matches each.

The format replaces the current three-tournament, 70-to-50-to-30 player reduction model, and the championship will rotate annually between two historic courses, allowing venues that do not normally host a PGA Tour event to be featured.

"From the beginning, the goal of the Future Competition Committee was to create an easier-to-follow competitive model for our fans with greater consequence and a stronger season-long narrative," PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp said. "The result is a season-ending structure that rewards excellence over the course of the year while building toward a reimagined Tour Championship."

Rolapp previously announced a two-series system for 2028, with roughly 120 players in the Championship Series and a Challenger Series of more than 140 players, incorporating promotion and relegation between the groups. The PGA Tour will reveal the dates and locations for the inaugural Championship Series Finale, the revamped Tour Championship, and the full 2028 schedule on Feb. 22, 2027.
