U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a food safety alert after an outbreak of E. coli and salmonella associated with alfalfa sprouts sickened 55 people in 15 states, according to federal health officials. The sprouts, produced by Everything Sprouts and sold under the Calco and Everything Sprouts brands, were distributed through various retailers and grocery stores.

Four individuals required hospitalization, but no fatalities have been reported. Health authorities have advised consumers to discard or return any potentially affected products and to clean surfaces that may have contacted the sprouts.

Symptoms of the infections include stomach cramps, diarrhea—sometimes bloody—fever, nausea and dehydration. The CDC recommends seeking medical care for high fever, persistent diarrhea, bloody stools, inability to retain fluids, or signs of dehydration such as reduced urination, dry mouth, or dizziness upon standing.

The majority of cases were reported in Minnesota (21) and Wisconsin (17), with additional illnesses in New York, North Dakota, North Carolina, Florida, Washington, South Dakota, Iowa, Kansas, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Michigan, New Hampshire and South Carolina. Of the 55 patients, 46 were infected with E. coli, seven with salmonella and two with both pathogens. The outbreak, involving three strains of E. coli and one strain of salmonella, began in late May and continued through Aug. 8. State health officials and the Food and Drug Administration are participating in the investigation.
