Diamondbacks place Ketel Marte on restricted list after he misses game

Arizona second baseman Ketel Marte was placed on the restricted list after failing to appear for the opening game of the Boston series, prompting manager Torey Lovullo to cite a personal matter.

Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte did not arrive at Fenway Park for the series opener against the Boston Red Sox and was subsequently placed on the restricted list, the team said. Manager Torey Lovullo said he learned of the possibility that Marte might be absent early Monday morning and declined to discuss details of the personal issue.

Marte had been listed as the designated hitter, and the lineup was held until about 20 minutes before game time in hopes he would appear. After an 11-1 loss, Lovullo said, "All I know is that he's dealing with a personal issue. We're trying to figure that out, and he didn't show up today and he was put on the restricted list. That's as much as I know right now."

Teammates expressed limited knowledge of the situation. Outfielder Corbin Carroll called the day "weird" but praised the coaching staff for keeping the team prepared. Right fielder Jose Perdomo added, "I just came here to play, and I didn't see him here and we haven't talked yet. At the end of the day, we are a family and we're going to support everybody, no matter what."

The loss left the Diamondbacks at 66-60, one game behind the San Diego Padres and two games behind the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League wild-card race.
