American Heart Association says up to five cups of coffee a day are generally safe for most adults

摘要

The AHA’s July 2026 scientific statement finds that consuming up to five 8-ounce cups of coffee daily is linked to lower risk of heart failure, stroke and heart disease for most adults, while emphasizing individual tolerance.

The American Heart Association released a scientific statement in July 2026 indicating that most adults can safely consume up to 400 mg of caffeine per day, roughly five 8-ounce cups of coffee, without increasing heart risk. The guideline notes an association between moderate coffee intake and reduced incidence of heart failure, stroke and coronary disease, though causality has not been established.

"Coffee is much more than just a source of caffeine," said Dr. Kardie Tobb, a preventive cardiologist and medical director at Cone Health HeartCare Women’s Heart Health and Cardio-Obstetrics Clinic. She explained that coffee contains polyphenols, antioxidants and other biologically active compounds that may help lower inflammation and improve blood-sugar processing. Dr. Alan Rozanski, a professor of medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, added that the observed benefits likely stem from these polyphenols, but emphasized that most studies show correlation rather than cause and effect.

The statement cautions that the recommendation is not a directive for everyone to increase consumption. Dr. Tobb advised that individuals should monitor personal reactions such as palpitations, anxiety, insomnia or blood-pressure changes, and adjust intake accordingly. She highlighted that people with poorly controlled hypertension, caffeine sensitivity, arrhythmias or pregnancy should be more conservative.

Both experts suggested that most cardiovascular benefits appear with two to four cups per day, and that decaffeinated coffee can provide similar polyphenols without the stimulant effects. They also recommended drinking filtered coffee rather than unfiltered methods, as the latter can retain diterpenes that raise LDL cholesterol. Finally, they warned that added sugars, syrups and cream can diminish potential health advantages and that overall caffeine from other sources should be considered to avoid sleep disruption.
