Israeli Families Demand Ceasefire and Hostage Release Amid Nationwide Protests

Resumen

Thousands of Israelis protested nationwide, urging the government to negotiate a ceasefire with Hamas to secure the release of hostages held in Gaza.

Thousands of Israelis took to the streets on Saturday night, demanding that the government negotiate a comprehensive deal with Hamas to end the ongoing conflict in Gaza and secure the release of all remaining hostages. The demonstrations occurred as Israel prepared to capture Gaza City, a move that families of the hostages fear could further endanger their loved ones.

In Tel Aviv, Einav Zangauker, mother of hostage Matan Zangauker, addressed the crowd, expressing frustration with the government's approach. She announced plans for a nationwide strike, stating, "Tomorrow we'll stop the country... We can't take any more." Similar protests were held in Jerusalem, Haifa, Rehovot, and other major cities.

The planned strike has garnered support from local municipalities, businesses, universities, and various unions, including the Israel Airports Authority employees' union. However, the country's central labor union, the Histadrut, has not endorsed the action.

Pushpa Joshi, sister of abducted Nepali student Bipin Joshi, also spoke at the Tel Aviv rally. Having arrived in Israel last week, she shared her family's anguish over the lack of information about her brother, who was taken hostage on October 7, 2023. She emphasized that prayers alone are insufficient and called for more decisive action.

Despite mounting public pressure, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office reiterated that Israel will only agree to a comprehensive deal that includes the disarming of Hamas, the demilitarization of the Gaza Strip, and the establishment of governance that will coexist peacefully with Israel. This stance comes amid reports of Hamas's willingness to release some hostages in exchange for a temporary ceasefire.

Currently, 50 hostages remain in Gaza, including 49 of the 251 abducted on October 7, 2023. Among them, at least 28 are confirmed dead, 20 are believed to be alive, and there are grave concerns for the lives of two others. Hamas is also holding the body of an IDF soldier killed in Gaza in 2014.
