The remains of 73-year-old Israeli hostage Meny Godard, who was abducted during the October 7, 2023, attack on Kibbutz Be'eri, have been returned to Israel by Hamas. Godard and his wife, Ayelet, were killed during the assault, with his body taken into Gaza.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed the return of Godard's body, stating that it was transferred by the Red Cross from Hamas to IDF troops inside the Gaza Strip. A military ceremony, led by a military rabbi, was held before the casket was escorted to the Abu Kabir Forensic Institute in Tel Aviv for identification.
In March 2025, Israeli troops recovered personal belongings of Godard at a Palestinian Islamic Jihad post in Rafah, southern Gaza. Despite these findings, his body remained in Gaza until its recent return.
The Prime Minister's Office expressed condolences to the Godard family and reiterated Israel's commitment to retrieving the remaining hostages.
Godard was a former professional soccer player who served in the Yom Kippur War. He held various roles in Kibbutz Be'eri, including chief economist and lifeguard.
The bodies of three slain hostages—two Israelis and one Thai national—remain held in Gaza: Master Sgt. Ran Gvili, Dror Or, and Sudthisak Rinthalak.
