Michigan Ends Lettuce Advisory as Cyclosporiasis Cases Decline

Résumé

Michigan health officials lifted the warning against bagged salads after a drop in cyclosporiasis infections, while still urging avoidance of recalled lettuce.

Michigan health officials announced on Thursday that the advisory against bagged salads is being lifted as the number of cyclosporiasis cases in the state continues to decline. The state has recorded 12,485 infections since June, including 279 hospitalizations and two deaths, but recent data show a downward trend in diarrhea-related emergency department visits. > "The majority of contaminated produce is likely no longer available for consumption," the department said, noting that most exposures occurred in late June and early July.

Residents are now advised that they can resume normal salad consumption and handling practices, though they should still steer clear of lettuce that has been recalled. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has linked the outbreak to shredded iceberg lettuce served at Taco Bell and supplied by Taylor Farms de Mexico. Following a voluntary recall on July 17, the Food and Drug Administration removed all of Taylor Farms' iceberg lettuce grown in central Mexico, which had been distributed to restaurants and retailers in 27 states, including select Walmart stores under the Marketside brand.

Michigan health officials also recommend purchasing whole heads of lettuce or salad greens instead of pre-packaged mixes, discarding outer leaves, and thoroughly washing the inner leaves before eating.
