Eagles training camp highlights early standouts and concerns
After six practices, including two in full pads, the Philadelphia Eagles have identified several players performing above expectations and others whose roles appear limited.
The Philadelphia Eagles have completed six training-camp practices, two of which were conducted in full pads, and coaches have begun to assess player performance. Edge rusher Jalyx Hunt has emerged as a top performer, consistently pressuring quarterback Jalen Hurts and leading the team in interceptions and sacks last season. Hunt and fellow edge rusher Nolan Smith are competing for the starting spot opposite Jonathan Greenard, who began camp on the PUP list.
Running back Tank Bigsby, who joined the team after last season’s camp, has impressed with high-energy effort in practice, complementing feature back Saquon Barkley. Defensive tackle Jalen Carter, recently signed to a record extension, arrived in “phenomenal” shape, according to general manager Howie Roseman, and has been dominant in drills.
Wide receiver Dontayvion Wicks has quickly become a reliable target for Hurts, positioning himself as the second-option receiver ahead of first-round pick Makai Lemon. Linebacker Jeremiah Trotter Jr. has shown strong instincts and run-stopping ability despite limited starting depth at the position. Rookie offensive tackle Markel Bell has earned first-team reps at right tackle while veteran Lane Johnson has missed time, and interior lineman Drew Kendall has been the primary backup when Landon Dickerson has been unavailable.
Conversely, first-round receiver Makai Lemon has struggled with a hamstring injury, missing several practices and limiting his early impact. Fourth-round defensive tackle Ty Robinson remains low on the depth chart and has not produced notable plays. Second-round tight end Eli Stowers has seen limited involvement in the passing game, with veteran Johnny Mundt emerging as a more reliable option. Running back Will Shipley, primarily a special-teams contributor, has yet to make a significant offensive contribution, highlighted by a dropped pass on Day 5.
"He arrived to this training camp in 'phenomenal' shape, according to GM Howie Roseman," the team statement noted.
The coaching staff will continue to evaluate performances as the camp progresses, with roster decisions expected to evolve over the coming weeks.
